HVDC Systems Integration

The Institute for Energy Transition (ITE) Supergrid is a collaborative research platform in the field of low-carbon energy, bringing together the expertise of industry and public research in the logic of public-

private co-investment and close cooperation between all stakeholders of the sector.

The institute aims to develop technologies for the Supergrid that is the future electricity transmission network, using direct current and alternating current at very high voltages (in the order of one million volts), designed to transport large-

  • scale energy from renewable sources remote from load centers, a significant portion of which are offshore, which will be in connection with flexible storage resources;
  • to manage the intermittent nature of renewable energy; and also, to ensure the stability and security of the network.

    General context

    The program Architecture and Systems has developed various technical concepts regarding the building of HVDC grids, as well as various tools to assess those concepts.

    It becomes necessary now to bring together concepts and tools in such a way to be able to propose and demonstrate viable MTDC system architectures principles.

    Technical and Economical Assessment (TEA) of solutions is a key factor and a TEA tool development is currently in progress.

    It seems now that a collaboration with external organizations is needed in order to consolidate the TEA tool functionalities.


    The Engineer will be a central pillar of the program activities. He (She) will have to structure the system integration activity and to perform associated tasks.

    More particularly, he (she) will have to set up and animate a collaborative project with external organizations, with the objective to consolidate the existing TEA tool functionalities.

    He (she) will have to manage interactions between experts, and be able to achieve good synthesis of the different technical aspects, concepts and assessment tools.

    He (She) shall be able to manage technical discussions with partners such a Transmission System Operators (TSO) in order to capture grid planning dimensions and requirements within the scope of collaborative partnerships.

    He (She) will work in close relation with SuperGrid Institute Collaborative Project Development Manager and with software development team.

    System integration :

  • To integrate various technical concepts (developed within the program Architecture and Systems), in order to propose viable (from operation, security and economic point of views) MTDC system architecture principles
  • To identify major constraints and remaining challenges for each System architecture principle
  • To assess the proposed architecture principles, through modelling in various environments : EMT virtual mock-up, TEA framework
  • MTDC System Technical and Economic Assessment :

  • To work in collaboration with grid planning organizations, in order to assess MTDC technological options in comparison with alternative solutions such as multiple Point-
  • to-Point options or AC reinforcements

  • To further develop TEA tool functionalities through this collaboration, in relation with TEA tool software development group
  • To develop the collaborative project : identify partners, elaborate a structured project proposal, in close relation with SuperGrid Institute Collaborative Project Development Manager
  • Excellence and expertise :

  • To reach and maintain world-class expertise in HVDC system architecture principles
  • To be active in term of innovative concepts patenting
  • Collaborative projects :

  • contribute to collaborative EU research projects
  • To contribute to collaborative projects with TSOs, or other organizations
  • Valorization of results :

  • To contribute to the valorization process of SuperGrid Institute
  • To contribute to identify business opportunities
  • To contribute to relations with clients
  • Communication, visibility :

  • To publish technical papers
  • To participate to conferences and events
  • Profile of the candidate

    Engineer / Master / PhD with at least 10 years of experience in the field of power systems and HVDC systems.

    Skills :

  • Electrical engineering

  • Electricity market knowledge will be an asset
