UNESCO , the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, is responsible for coordinating international cooperation in education, science, culture and communication.

Our objective, according to our Constitution, is "to contribute to the maintenance of peace and security by strengthening, through education, science and culture, collaboration among nations, to ensure universal respect for justice, law, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, regardless of race, sex, language or religion, which the United Nations Charter recognizes for all peoples".

The Executive Office of the Culture Sector provides strategic advice, quality control and management support to the Assistant Director-General for Culture (ADG / CLT) and ensures the overall coordination of the development, implementation and monitoring of the approved programme and budget of the Culture Sector, as well as the Sector's communication with other Sectors / Bureaux / Offices at UNESCO, with other agencies of the UN System and with external partners.


Under the overall authority of the Chief of the Executive Office of the Culture Sector, and the direct supervision of the Knowledge Management Specialist, the incumbent will contribute to the Knowledge Management functions of the Culture Sector, and in particular :

  • Produce individual short papers - through an in-depth review of the Culture Sector’s programmes, activities, publications, statutory documents, speeches, briefings, web news and background information - on the following transversal themes : COVID-19 & Culture Priority Africa & Culture Priority Gender Equality & Culture Small Island Developing States & Culture
  • Each paper on the above themes, which will be elaborated based on contributions from the Culture Sector’s Entities and individual research, will be drafted in English and must summarize the Sector’s major initiatives on that subject, key facts and figures (from both UNESCO and outside sources) and main takeaways on each subject.
  • It is expected that these briefings will be shared internally with colleagues at Headquarters and in the Field, as well as with the general public, by feeding speeches and content for UNESCO’s website.

    The briefings should also serve as a resource for answering Member State requests for information.

    Deliverables and timeline

  • 15 November 2020 : a first draft of the four individual papers indicated in article 1 above. The first draft must be as complete as possible, clearly indicating the knowledge gaps present and already providing the main takeaways on each subject.
  • The sourcing of all information, in particular of the figures, must be clearly presented.

  • 21 December 2020 : Four standalone papers on each of the four themes indicated above under article 1. These will incorporate all comments provided by the Executive Office and will be fully finalized, including with appropriate sourcing.
  • Fees

    Conforming to UNESCO rules and procedures and aligned with the qualifications required, the monthly renumeration is 1200 euros per month.

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in the field of Communication, International Affairs, Cultural Policy or similar;
  • At least two years of relevant professional experience in the field of culture, political sciences, international relations, development or in a related field;
  • Experience in international organizations or academic institutions;
  • Strong communication skills in English and French;
  • Excellent writing skills in English;
  • Research and analysis skills.
